A passwordless sign-in method allows users to choose their smartphones as their primary authentication method for apps, websites or other online services according to Google described in the blog post that was published in May 5.
The phone can be locked using the default option, such as making patterns or entering a PIN or using fingerprint unlock will suffice to log in to websites without entering an account password.
This is accomplished by the use of a cryptographic token, also known as the passkey, which is used to connect the phone with the website.
In requiring logins on a physical device the concept is that users can gain the benefits of security and simplicity.
Without an account password, there’ll be no requirement to keep passwords across various services or risk compromising security by using the same password in multiple locations.
A passwordless system makes it more challenging for cybercriminals to steal the login information remotely as login requires physical devices. Phishing attacks that cause users to be sent to a fake web page or email that contains a malicious link to steal passwords are much more difficult to attack.
