Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the chief of Awami Muslim League (AML), has been released from Adiala Jail after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi granted him bail in connection with the May 9 riots case. The judge approved the bail against surety bonds worth Rs200,000, and during the hearing, ordered authorities to release him immediately if he was not wanted in any other case.

Sheikh Rashid’s lawyer attended the hearing, while no representative from the prosecution side appeared, prompting the judge to express displeasure over their absence.

Speaking to the media outside the jail, the former interior minister expressed that his detention had hindered his ability to conduct his election campaign.

Meanwhile, in the general elections held on February 8, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Hanif Abbasi emerged victorious over Sheikh Rashid in NA-56.
