Mumbai Indians’ decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as captain has stirred controversy, with fans expressing their discontent during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Prior to the 14th match, Pandya faced a chorus of boos when his name was announced during the toss.

Former cricketer turned commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar, inadvertently triggered the disapproval by mentioning Pandya’s name, leading to a resounding echo of boos from the stands. The discontent stems from Mumbai franchise’s choice to hand over captaincy to Pandya instead of the seasoned leader, Rohit Sharma.

Manjrekar’s call for the fans to ‘behave’ only amplified the tension. The match, held at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, saw Pandya smiling amidst the disapproval from his home crowd.

The cricketing community is baffled by Mumbai’s decision, given Rohit Sharma’s stellar track record as the team’s captain since 2013. Sharma boasts an impressive five IPL titles under his leadership, a feat unmatched by any other Mumbai Indians captain.

Pandya’s stint as captain with the Gujrat Titans, resulting in an IPL 14 title win, perhaps influenced Mumbai’s decision to bring him back to the squad this season. Despite his commendable 70.96% win percentage with the GT franchise, Pandya’s return to Mumbai was met with a lukewarm reception from the fans.

Adding to the confusion, Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the Indian team at the upcoming 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, a role initially speculated to be Pandya’s. This situation raises questions about the dynamics within the dressing room during such a significant event.
