OpenAI, currently the most valued AI startup, is collaborating with its primary investor Microsoft to develop what could potentially be the world’s largest AI supercomputer, dubbed Stargate. This groundbreaking project is estimated to cost up to $100 billion, dwarfing existing supercomputers by a factor of 100, as reported by The Information.

The objective of Stargate is to power OpenAI’s future AI models, including the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The timeline for this endeavor spans six years, with the aim of making Stargate operational by 2028.

While still in the early planning stages, it’s envisioned that Stargate will necessitate nuclear power to meet its colossal energy demands, which cannot be fulfilled by conventional means. Estimates suggest that gigawatts of power will be required to run this supercomputer.

Details regarding the hardware configuration, onboard equipment, and deployment location for Stargate are yet to be finalized. There’s speculation that the project might entail multiple data centers clustered in one location rather than a single facility. As such, it’s premature to delve into specific project details at this juncture.

Nevertheless, the significance of such data centers in the advancement of AI technologies cannot be overstated. Nvidia’s CEO has forecasted potential market expansion to $2 trillion within the next five years, underscoring the pivotal role of data centers in this domain. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s reported ambition to secure $7 trillion for AI initiatives may no longer seem far-fetched given the scale of goals like Stargate.
