First Case Confirmed in Peshawar
Pakistan has recorded its first monkeypox (mpox) case of 2025, as confirmed by ARY News. The Ministry of Health spokesperson reported that the patient, who returned from Dubai on January 24, tested positive for the virus during screening at Peshawar Airport. This new case raises the total number of mpox cases in the country to 10 since the declaration of a health emergency.
The patient has been transferred to Services Hospital in Peshawar for treatment. The Ministry assured the public that effective containment measures are in place. However, concerns have been raised about potential transmission due to the patient’s travel history to Gulf countries.
Another Case Identified in Rajanpur
In a separate incident, a passenger arriving from Sharjah was screened at the airport and exhibited symptoms of monkeypox. The individual, identified as Javed Ahmed from Rajanpur, tested positive and was immediately isolated to prevent further spread of the virus.

About Monkeypox (Mpox)
Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the Mpox virus. While its natural reservoir remains unidentified, African rodents and non-human primates like monkeys are suspected carriers that can transmit the virus to humans.
Symptoms include:
- A rash that starts 1–3 days after fever onset, beginning on the face and spreading to other parts of the body.
- The rash progresses through stages: macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and finally scabs.
- Additional symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.
The incubation period ranges from 7 to 14 days (can vary from 5 to 21 days), and the illness usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks.
Public Advisory
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and report any symptoms promptly.
