Tennis World No. 1 Suspended Until May 2025
Tennis World No. 1 and reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner has agreed to a three-month suspension after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The ban follows two failed doping tests in 2024 and will keep him out of competition until May 4, 2025.
Failed Tests and WADA Settlement
Sinner tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, during two separate drug tests in March 2024. While an independent tribunal initially ruled in his favor, accepting that the exposure was unintentional, WADA chose to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, before the case could proceed, both parties reached an agreement, resulting in an immediate three-month suspension.
No Intentional Doping, Says WADA
In an official statement, WADA clarified:
“WADA accepts that Mr. Sinner did not intend to cheat.”
The agency emphasized that athletes are responsible for the actions of their entourage and that Sinner’s clostebol exposure did not enhance his performance, occurring due to negligence from his support team.
Key Tournaments Sinner Will Miss
Due to the suspension, Sinner will miss multiple ATP Masters 1000 events, including:
- Indian Wells Masters (March 6-17, 2025)
- Miami Open (March 19-30, 2025)
- Monte-Carlo Masters (April 6-13, 2025)
- Barcelona Open (April 14-20, 2025)
- Madrid Open (April 27 – May 4, 2025)
However, he will be allowed to resume training from April 13, meaning he could return to competitive tennis at the Rome Masters (May 11-18, 2025), just before the French Open (May 25 – June 8, 2025).

Impact on World No. 1 Ranking
Sinner’s suspension could also cost him his World No. 1 ranking, as he will not be able to defend the points he earned from Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, where he reached the semi-finals and won the title last year. This opens the door for Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev to potentially claim the top spot in the ATP rankings.
What’s Next for Jannik Sinner?
Despite this setback, the 23-year-old Italian remains one of the biggest stars in tennis. As he prepares for his return, fans and analysts expect him to continue dominating the sport, especially in the post-Big Four era.
