LHC Issues Directives to Combat Smog and Water Wastage

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed authorities to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at all fuel stations as part of ongoing efforts to reduce smog and promote environmental sustainability.

During a hearing on environmental pollution, Justice Shahid Karim expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of effective measures to control smog and water wastage.


Key Directives from the Court

  • Water Emergency Declared: The court has ordered the installation of water meters across Lahore and directed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to provide tax relief for eco-friendly buildings.
  • Canal Water Restoration: The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has been assigned the responsibility of restoring canal water.
  • Miyawaki Forests Initiative: The LDA and DHA must establish at least one Miyawaki forest in every sector to enhance urban greenery.
  • Transition to Electric Rickshaws: Authorities have been urged to develop incentive programs for converting petrol-powered rickshaws into electric ones.
  • Parking Facilities Expansion: The court instructed the government to create parking facilities through public-private partnerships.

Additionally, Justice Karim criticized WASA for its slow progress in installing water meters, highlighting the need for immediate action.

The court has adjourned the hearing on various smog-related petitions until March 21.
