A new report from Android Authority reveals details about Google’s Tensor G5 chipset, which will power the Pixel 10 series. The biggest change comes in the form of a fabrication shift from Samsung to TSMC’s 3nm-class node and the introduction of a fully custom Image Signal Processor (ISP).

Custom ISP for Enhanced Camera Processing

  • Google is developing a completely in-house ISP for the first time.
  • Previous Tensor chips incorporated Samsung ISPs with Google-designed elements.
  • This shift may lead to significant changes in camera performance for the Pixel 10 series.

New Imagination Technologies GPU

  • The Tensor G5 will replace the Arm Mali-G715 MP7 GPU found in the Tensor G4.
  • Google is adopting the IMG DXT GPU from Imagination Technologies.
  • The real-world performance impact remains to be seen and will depend on future benchmark tests and reviews.

Memory, Power, and Third-Party Integration

  • Google is introducing a custom memory controller and system-level cache.
  • Tensor G5 will support third-party components for USB, PCIe, I3C, display (DSI, DisplayPort), and LPDDR5x storage.
  • The Samsung MFC codec is being replaced by Chips&Media’s WAVE677DV, supporting AV1, VP9, HEVC, and H.264 video formats.

A More Third-Party Friendly Chipset

  • Google is moving away from proprietary solutions like the “BigWave” AV1 codec.
  • This marks a strategic shift toward a more modular and unified Tensor G5 platform.
