Massive Earthquake Hits Myanmar and Thailand

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and parts of Thailand on Friday, causing significant destruction to buildings, infrastructure, and bridges. The tremor also affected China’s Yunnan province, where authorities recorded a 7.9-magnitude quake.

Death Toll and Casualties

The earthquake led to a major humanitarian crisis, with the following reported casualties:

  • Myanmar: At least 144 fatalities and around 730 injuries, as confirmed by Myanmar’s military leader, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing.
  • Thailand (Bangkok): 10 deaths, 16 injuries, and 101 missing individuals, primarily linked to three construction sites, including a collapsed high-rise.

Officials warn that the casualty figures may rise further as rescue operations continue.

Widespread Destruction and Infrastructure Damage

The earthquake caused severe structural damage in several areas:

  • Buildings collapsed in multiple cities.
  • A bridge and a dam in Myanmar reportedly suffered heavy damage.
  • Unverified reports suggest sections of the historic Sagaing Bridge have collapsed.
  • In Bangkok, Thailand, an under-construction high-rise collapsed, leading to significant casualties.

Aftershocks and Emergency Response

Following the initial 7.7-magnitude tremor, multiple aftershocks were recorded, including a strong 6.4-magnitude quake. In response:

  • Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an emergency meeting to assess the crisis.
  • Rescue teams are working to locate missing individuals and assist the injured.

Panic and Social Media Footage

Videos circulating online show:

  • Buildings swaying in Bangkok, prompting people to flee to the streets.
  • Water sloshing out of infinity pools atop high-rises, mimicking mini-tsunami waves in small residential pools.
  • A massive plume of dust and debris, reportedly from a collapsing high-rise.

Myanmar’s History of Seismic Activity

Myanmar, located along the Sagaing Fault, is prone to major earthquakes. Historical data shows:

  • Six earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher hit the region between 1930 and 1956.
  • In 2016, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Bagan, Myanmar’s ancient capital, killing three people and damaging historic temples.
