Instagram has officially rolled out Edits, a new standalone video editing app now available for free on both iOS and Android. Aimed at content creators who need more advanced tools than what Instagram currently offers in-app, Edits brings a comprehensive suite of features focused on professional-grade video editing, performance tracking, and content planning.

Packed with Pro-Level Editing Features

Unlike Instagram’s native editor, Edits offers a host of sophisticated tools to elevate content creation. Notable features include:

  • AI-powered animations generated from still images
  • Green screen effects for background manipulation
  • Automatic subject cutouts for seamless layering and visual storytelling
  • Project organization with space to add creative notes
  • Video performance tracking to monitor engagement metrics

These tools give creators significantly more control and flexibility, making it a valuable addition for those who take content creation seriously.

Meta’s Strategic Move Against CapCut

The timing of Edits’ release appears intentional, arriving shortly after TikTok and CapCut faced temporary removals from US app stores. This suggests that Meta sees Edits as a strategic answer to CapCut—TikTok’s popular editing companion.

However, Instagram head Adam Mosseri clarified on Threads that while there is some overlap, Edits is designed for a different audience. Rather than casual users, it targets dedicated creators, offering a broader and more focused toolkit than CapCut.

What’s Next: AI and Collaboration Features Incoming

Meta is already teasing several future upgrades for Edits, further strengthening its capabilities. Planned additions include:

  • Keyframe-based animation tools for precise motion control
  • Advanced AI editing tools for smarter automation
  • Collaborative editing, allowing multiple users to work on the same video project in real-time

These updates position Edits as a long-term investment in Meta’s creator ecosystem, signaling continued support and innovation for digital video creators.
