Microsoft has rolled out a significant upgrade to its Notepad app, transforming the simple text editor into an AI-powered writing assistant. The new features, available to Microsoft 365 and Copilot Pro subscribers, integrate generative AI directly into the application.

AI Content Generation in Notepad
The standout feature, “Write with Copilot,” enables users to generate text directly within Notepad by either right-clicking in the editor or pressing Ctrl + Q. Upon entering a prompt, the AI generates relevant content, which can be refined further with follow-up inputs. This builds on the earlier “Rewrite” tool, which allowed users to enhance or rephrase existing content. Now, users can generate original text from scratch without switching to another application.

Microsoft is also introducing AI tools to additional Windows applications. In the Paint app, users can create custom stickers from written prompts and use a new “Object select” tool to isolate elements in images. These features are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, including select HP laptops.

The Snipping Tool has also been upgraded with a “Perfect screenshot” feature, which uses AI to automatically crop and resize screen captures. While this feature is limited to Copilot+ hardware, a new “Color picker” tool—displaying HEX, RGB, and HSL values for any on-screen color—is available to all users.

Availability and Rollout
All new features are being released first to Windows Insiders, Microsoft’s beta testing program. General rollout will follow in future updates, depending on hardware compatibility and subscription eligibility.
