Canon has stunned photography enthusiasts by unveiling its astonishing 410-megapixel full-frame image sensor, the LI8030SA, to the public for the first time at the Shanghai International Photographic Equipment and Digital Imaging Exhibition (P&I 2025).
Although the sensor is still in development, Canon showcased it in a secure glass display, marking a major step forward in high-resolution imaging. Originally announced in January 2025, the LI8030SA boasts a 35mm full-frame format with a staggering 410 million effective pixels.
To put this in perspective, the sensor can capture images with 198 times the detail of Full HD (1080p) and 49 times that of 4K resolution. It also supports video recording at 100MP resolution at 24fps, or 410MP at 8fps, setting a new benchmark in digital imaging.
While not expected to reach the consumer market any time soon, this ultra-high-resolution sensor is likely to find its place in highly specialized applications, such as scientific imaging, industrial analysis, or archival preservation. Its performance even outclasses Phase One’s 150MP medium format cameras.

Canon has made a habit of showcasing its cutting-edge tech in China. At a previous event in October 2024, the company previewed a new firmware upgrade for the Canon EOS R7, boosting ISO sensitivity up to ISO 204,800 — a massive leap from the camera’s original ceiling of ISO 32,000 (51,200 expanded). This improvement relies on pixel-shift technology, similar to what Pentax has used to enhance color depth and clarity.
Canon China Vice President Eiji Hirano emphasized the significance of the Chinese market, citing rapid growth and strong demand in the imaging sector. He highlighted Canon’s commitment to innovation across all user levels — from beginners to professionals — and its goal of building a thriving imaging ecosystem.
“We actively listen to user needs and create a product matrix covering entry-level users to professional enthusiasts,” Hirano stated. “We continue to provide innovative solutions and work with industry partners to build a prosperous ecosystem for the imaging industry.”
Canon’s presence at P&I 2025 not only showcases its technological prowess but also signals its deepening engagement with the rapidly expanding Asian imaging market.
