Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy Z Fold7 has just begun arriving in stores, but early reports have surfaced regarding a potential hinge issue. Some users claim that their Z Fold7 units are not unfolding completely flat, sparking mild concern among fans of the foldable series.
The first reports appeared on Reddit, where users shared photos of demo units that seemingly do not open all the way. The hinge appears to stop just short of a fully flat position. One user noted that they could manually push the device to open fully, indicating the hinge might be stiff or not locking smoothly into place.
There are a number of possible explanations. These demo units could be pre-production models, handled roughly by customers, or not opened properly due to user caution in a store setting. These scenarios suggest that the issue may not be a widespread defect.
Samsung has yet to release any official statement regarding the hinge reports, and there’s no indication of a recall or mass defect at this time. Interestingly, review units sent to tech reviewers have not reported any such problem, suggesting the issue may be isolated.

The Z Fold7 features the new Armour FlexHinge, which Samsung says improves durability and minimizes the crease on the display. While Samsung hasn’t released the official fold endurance count for the Fold7, the previous Z Fold6 was rated for 200,000 folds, equivalent to about 100 folds per day for five years.
Previous generations like the Z Fold5 used a zero-gap hinge that still allowed for a minor angle tolerance (between 178.5° and 181.5°). It’s possible that the Z Fold7 has a similar design, and the demo units simply fall within this range.
As of now, the issue does not appear to be widespread and seems limited to a few demo models. Customers receiving the retail version of the Galaxy Z Fold7 are advised to check the hinge function when unboxing. If anything seems off, they should contact Samsung support immediately.
For now, this is something to watch closely, but there’s no reason to worry prematurely. Samsung’s foldables have come a long way in terms of durability, and the company continues to refine its hinge technology with each generation.
