Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti confirmed on Thursday that the United States has not imposed punitive tariffs on Pakistani exports, contrary to earlier fears. He stated that Pakistan now enjoys one of the lowest tariff rates in the region, even lower than India, which has seen tariffs as high as 25%.
Bhatti made the remarks in response to MNA Tahira Aurangzeb’s inquiry about a possible $1 billion loss to Pakistan due to new US trade tariffs. He explained that the concerns stemmed from an earlier period when tariff policies were under review. However, through consistent diplomatic engagement by the Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Commerce Minister, and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), Pakistan successfully avoided any harsh trade penalties.
He further informed the National Assembly that the Ministry of Commerce is working closely with chambers of commerce and trade unions to introduce support initiatives for exporters. These include training and facilitation programs aimed at strengthening local manufacturing and export capabilities.

Highlighting Pakistan’s current trade relationship with the US, Bhatti noted a $3.3 billion trade surplus and expressed optimism that favorable trade terms would further enhance export performance.
Addressing a related concern, MNA Dr. Shazia Sobia highlighted the lack of export infrastructure in regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly for perishable goods like fresh and dry fruits. She emphasized the urgent need for cold chain systems and refrigeration facilities to boost regional exports.
In response, Bhatti acknowledged the infrastructure gap and reassured the House that the government is taking steps to improve logistics and storage networks in underdeveloped areas to ensure inclusive growth in the export sector.
