Electricity consumers in Pakistan could soon see relief as the government considers increasing the protected consumption limit from 200 to 300 units.

The proposal follows concerns raised by lawmakers to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting that consumers using just one unit above the current 200-unit cap were being charged an extra Rs. 5,000 — a situation they termed unfair.

If the change is approved, the higher tariff would apply only to those consuming more than 300 units. A high-level committee will review the existing categories of protected and non-protected consumers and is expected to recommend the revised limit soon.
