Pakistan has successfully developed a fully secure mobile phone designed specifically for government officials, under a pilot project by the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC). Both the hardware and software of the device have been engineered entirely within the country.

According to NTC officials, the secure handset runs on a custom operating system that does not connect to the internet, significantly reducing the risk of cyber intrusions. All applications are locally developed, and the phone is compatible with SIM cards from any Pakistani telecom operator. Calls can only be made between other secure handsets of the same type, ensuring secure communication.

The phone has no backup feature, making it impossible to extract data if lost or stolen. Communication through the device cannot be intercepted or monitored, guaranteeing protection for sensitive government conversations.

NTC officials confirmed that ten units have been produced in the first phase of the pilot project. Mass production will require additional funding to expand the initiative across various government departments. The officials also highlighted that commercial platforms like WhatsApp are not secure, citing instances during the recent Pakistan-India conflict where WhatsApp communications were exposed, underlining the need for a dedicated secure government communication device.
