Lenovo debuted a groundbreaking concept at this year’s MWC: the ThinkBook with a transparent display. This prototype showcases a 17.3-inch MicroLED borderless screen and a transparent keyboard area.
The display boasts up to 55 percent transparency, becoming opaque when pixels illuminate. With 1,000 nits of brightness, the panel offers excellent visibility indoors and outdoors. A rear camera likely supports AI object recognition, facilitating interaction with physical objects and the overlaying of digital information, enabling unique user-generated content.
Users can seamlessly transition between typing and drawing with a compatible pen. The transparent screen seamlessly blends with its environment when displaying videos and dynamic images.

Lenovo has not disclosed hardware specifications, raising questions about the device’s practicality. Despite the allure of a transparent laptop, challenges persist. Its fragility poses a significant concern, as glass is prone to breakage. Moreover, without tactile feedback, typing on glass could be disconcerting unless Lenovo integrates an effective haptic feedback system. Visibility of the display also remains uncertain.
While the concept is exciting and reminiscent of sci-fi depictions, refinement is necessary before real-world implementation. Despite these challenges, the transparent laptop represents a promising glimpse into the future of technology.
