OpenAI unveiled its new o3-mini model on Friday, offering a “reasoning” model to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier for the first time. Users can access the new o3-mini model by clicking the “Reason” button in the message interface.
Internal testing by OpenAI indicates that the o3-mini processes responses 24% faster than the previous o1-mini model. When set to “medium” reasoning effort, o3-mini produces results comparable to the more premium o1 system across a variety of technical fields such as mathematics, programming, and science.

Early benchmarking has shown particularly strong results in specialized technical areas, with o3-mini’s performance nearly matching its more expensive counterparts when handling complex computational and analytical tasks. The new model includes transparent reasoning processes, allowing users to observe how the system develops its responses rather than just receiving finalized answers, as with the regular ChatGPT model. Additionally, o3-mini comes equipped with built-in web search via ChatGPT Search, a feature OpenAI plans to extend to all its reasoning models.
With this launch, o3-mini replaces the o1-mini in the platform’s model selection menu. OpenAI also announced a 3x increase in daily message limits for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, raising the limit from 50 to 150 messages per day. For those seeking unlimited access to the new model, OpenAI’s premium Pro tier remains available at $200 per month. This announcement follows shortly after DeepSeek introduced its latest AI model, which made waves in the tech industry with its competitive pricing and open-source approach.
