As criticism mounts over the logistical arrangements for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has remained largely silent. However, his remarks following the semi-final between New Zealand and South Africa in Lahore have sparked debate.

Champions Trophy Final Moves to Dubai

The match in Lahore, which saw a modest turnout, was the last game in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. With India securing a place in the final, the title clash will now take place in Dubai, despite Pakistan being the official host nation.

When asked whether Pakistan should have hosted the final, Shukla dismissed the concern, saying:

“You should’ve asked Australia to win.”

His statement referenced the hybrid model, which allowed India to play all their matches in Dubai while the rest of the tournament took place in Pakistan.

Debate Over India-Pakistan Cricket Relations

The situation has reignited frustration over logistical issues that prevented Pakistan from hosting the final, marking their first ICC event in nearly 30 years.

Shukla also addressed the sensitive issue of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan, stating that while fans want a series, any such decision must come from the Indian government:

“For us to visit Pakistan, it will have to come from the government.”

Uncertainty for Pakistan Cricket Fans

With the Champions Trophy final moved to Dubai, Pakistani fans are left wondering when they will next see top international teams playing on their home soil. The decision continues to fuel discussions about the strained cricketing ties between India and Pakistan and Pakistan’s status as a host for major ICC events.
