The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office) has forecasted the onset of a significant heatwave starting from April 13, driven by a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere. The heatwave is expected to intensify into severe conditions in the southern regions of the country by April 14 (Monday).
According to the Met Office:
- Southern Pakistan (including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan) is likely to experience daytime temperatures 6 to 8°C above normal from April 13 to 18.
- Upper and central regions (including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan) will face temperatures 4 to 6°C above normal from April 14 to 18.
- Night temperatures are also expected to remain unusually warm.
- The intense heat may lead to duststorms and windstorms, potentially affecting infrastructure and visibility.
Advisory and Precautionary Measures
- The general public, especially children, the elderly, and women, are advised to avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated during daytime hours.
- Farmers should adjust their wheat harvesting schedules and ensure proper livestock care during the hot spell.
- The rising temperatures in northern areas may accelerate snowmelt from April 14 to 18, increasing water flow in rivers and streams.
- Loose structures such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels are at risk of damage from strong winds or duststorms.
Authorities urge all sectors and the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions to minimize risks during the forecast period.
