US President Donald Trump on Monday asserted that American intervention helped prevent a potential nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.
“We stopped a nuclear conflict. It could have been a bad nuclear war—millions could have died. I’m very proud of that,” Trump told reporters at the White House, emphasizing the role of US diplomacy in facilitating the ceasefire.
He further stated that the US is ready to support both nations in maintaining peace, adding that trade considerations also played a major role in de-escalating tensions.
“Trade is a big reason why they stopped fighting,” Trump noted.
The remarks came after Trump announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on Saturday, following a period of heightened military tension. He also expressed a willingness to assist in resolving the long-standing Kashmir conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
