Elon Musk Calls for Donald Trump’s Impeachment

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to terminate all government contracts with Elon Musk’s companies, prompting Musk to publicly support Trump’s impeachment in a dramatic escalation of their deteriorating relationship.

The tension stems from Trump’s efforts to cut federal spending by eliminating costly commercial contracts. Tesla and SpaceX, both led by Musk, stand to lose billions if the administration follows through with the plan. “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Following Trump’s remarks, Tesla’s stock plunged 14.3%, wiping out nearly $150 billion in market value—the biggest single-day loss in the company’s history.

Later that day, Musk responded “Yes” to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that called for Trump’s impeachment, highlighting the deepening divide between the two influential figures.

The fallout began earlier in the week when Musk blasted Trump’s tax and spending bill as a “disgusting abomination,” urging lawmakers to reject it. Trump fired back, expressing disappointment with Musk, who until recently served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and was a top political donor.

Musk accused Trump of being ungrateful and warned that new tariffs could push the U.S. into a recession. He also briefly threatened to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, NASA’s only active crew transport to the International Space Station.

Additionally, Musk floated the idea of launching a new political party and reducing future political donations, suggesting a complete break from Trump-aligned politics.

The high-profile feud, coming just six days after their joint Oval Office appearance, now threatens to fracture the Republican base ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
