In a major step toward improving transparency in electricity billing, the federal government has launched the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” mobile application. The initiative allows consumers to take control of their electricity meter readings by submitting a photo of their meter on a scheduled date, ensuring more accurate and fair billing.
The submitted photo will be used to generate the consumer’s electricity bill. In cases where both the consumer and the official meter reader provide readings, the lower of the two readings will be accepted. Moreover, if the consumer submits their reading on time, any subsequent reading by the meter reader will be disregarded.
The app, now available in five languages, is especially aimed at promoting transparency for consumers eligible for government subsidies and reducing complaints related to overbilling.

Ministerial Statements and National Rollout
Power Minister Awais Leghari highlighted the app as a critical tool in tackling overbilling and boosting consumer confidence in the billing process. He emphasized that it places greater control in the hands of the public.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the nationwide implementation of the app and announced a significant relief measure—the removal of the Rs. 35 PTV fee from electricity bills.
The Prime Minister also addressed broader power sector challenges, noting that Pakistan suffers a loss of Rs. 500 billion annually due to power theft. He reiterated his government’s commitment to reform through restructuring DISCO boards, enforcing merit-based appointments, and taking steps to resolve the circular debt crisis.
