The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, under the Interior Ministry of Pakistan, has announced a major update to its passport documentation policy: the inclusion of the mother’s name on all newly issued Pakistani passports.

Director-General Mustafa Jamal Kazi confirmed that this policy change aims to bring Pakistan’s documentation system in line with global norms. It also seeks to resolve practical challenges often faced by single mothers and their children, especially in legal or international travel situations.

Until now, Pakistani travel documents and national IDs have only listed the father’s name. However, this practice has frequently resulted in legal, procedural, and identity verification issues, particularly in cases involving widowed, divorced, or single mothers.

It’s important to note that existing passports will remain valid until their expiration date. However, going forward, all newly issued passports will include the names of both parents.

This step is being seen as a progressive move that promotes inclusivity, simplifies documentation processes for families, and ensures better international compatibility for Pakistani passport holders.
