Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated on Friday that Gwadar Port has the potential to generate over $850 million annually through value-added exports of fisheries and dates, provided there is sustained investment, infrastructure development, and effective policy support.

During a meeting focused on the operationalization of Gwadar Port, the minister highlighted that fisheries alone could contribute approximately $645 million each year. Balochistan has a fish catch potential of 300,000 tons, but the actual yield remains significantly lower due to outdated fishing equipment, low production capacity, and regulatory challenges. While 34 fish processing units currently operate in the province, most require modernization to meet international export standards.

Regarding the date industry, the minister noted that Panjgur and Turbat districts produce over 225,000 tons of dates annually. With adequate value addition, this sector could generate between $200 and $205 million in export revenue.

To improve accessibility, the minister also announced enhanced air connectivity. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will increase its weekly flights to Gwadar from one to three, including two to Karachi and one to Islamabad. A dedicated chartered flight service for investors is also under consideration.
