Pakistanis are set to enjoy an extended four-day holiday in August as two major events align just before the weekend, providing a rare stretch of national rest and celebration.

The break will begin on Thursday, August 14, with the observance of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, a national public holiday. The following day, Friday, August 15, marks Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) — a significant religious occasion commemorating the martyrdom of the revered figure.

Although Chehlum is not officially listed as a federal public holiday, cities like Karachi and Rawalpindi are expected to declare it a public holiday, following tradition. This sets the stage for a four-day holiday from Thursday to Sunday (August 14–17), offering citizens a much-needed opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate.

The extended break is expected to lead to increased public activity, with patriotic celebrations, religious processions, and family gatherings taking place across the country. Law enforcement agencies and local authorities have been instructed to enhance security arrangements nationwide, especially in areas hosting public events or religious gatherings.

Citizens are encouraged to stay updated on local government announcements regarding potential closures, traffic diversions, and safety protocols during this period.

In addition to religious observance and national pride, the four-day weekend is also expected to boost domestic tourism, retail sales, and travel, as many families may take the opportunity to reconnect and relax.
