The MG4 is set to become the first mass-produced electric car equipped with a semi-solid-state battery. SAIC Motor, the manufacturer behind the vehicle, has confirmed that the MG4’s new battery variant has already been approved for sale in China. The company plans to announce pricing details in September, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of 2025.

Semi-Solid-State Battery: A Step Towards Advanced Technology

The semi-solid-state battery in the MG4 represents a significant technological milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Unlike traditional liquid electrolyte batteries, semi-solid-state batteries use a reduced electrolyte content combined with solid components. This design aims to deliver improved energy density, enhanced safety features, and better cold tolerance, without moving to fully solid-state cell chemistry just yet.

SAIC’s approach is in line with the industry’s gradual progression, starting with large-scale vehicle production before scaling up the technology further.

Proven Design with New Battery Technology

The MG4 continues to maintain a compact five-door design and retains the two available LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery options (42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh). The car’s CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) range falls between 437 and 530 kilometers. The semi-solid-state variant will be introduced as an additional option, with details on capacity and range to be revealed during the September pricing announcement. The MG4 also integrates SAIC’s CTB (cell-to-body) architecture and efficient thermal management.

Key Questions Remain

While the semi-solid-state battery represents an exciting leap in EV technology, several details are still unconfirmed. Information on the specific cell chemistry, packing density, and charging performance remains elusive. The battery is believed to be a manganese-based lithium-ion type, supplied by Suzhou Qingtao Power Technology, but exact specifications will be disclosed when pricing is announced.

Global Launch and Regional Approvals

Currently, the MG4’s semi-solid-state battery will launch in China, with regional approvals and pricing for international markets still pending. The global scaling of production and distribution will depend on local regulations and approvals.

With the price announcement set for September and deliveries planned for the end of 2025, the MG4 is poised to introduce semi-solid-state battery technology into the mass market. This step marks an important transition in the EV industry, moving towards higher energy density and better performance, while still relying on proven production methods.
