Lahore and nearby areas have been placed on high alert as rising floodwaters from the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers threaten to inundate parts of the city. Authorities from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have urged residents to stay vigilant, with flood levels rising due to torrential monsoon rains and water releases from India’s Thein and Madhopur dams.

River Levels Surge

In the latest flood update, officials reported that the Ravi River is carrying up to 2.5 lakh cusecs near Kot Naina and Jassar, while the Chenab River has reached 7.79 lakh cusecs at Head Marala. In Shakargarh, the Nilah Bainsi and Nilah Deer streams have overflowed, submerging multiple villages. Breaches in protective embankments near Okara and Burewala have resulted in flooding of farmlands and residential areas.

Record rainfall in Sialkot and surrounding districts has caused collapsed roofs, flooding, and displacement, while Lahore has also seen significant damage due to heavy rain. Authorities are advising citizens to limit travel and be ready for emergency evacuation.

District administrations have mobilized the army, Rangers, police, and rescue teams to carry out evacuation and relief operations. So far, around 150,000 people have been moved to safe zones, with food, shelter, and medicine provided in relief camps.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed federal agencies and ministers to stay on high alert and ensure effective disaster response. Residents of low-lying areas in Lahore and nearby districts have been strongly advised to relocate immediately.

Officials have warned that the next 48 hours are critical, with more heavy rainfall expected, which could worsen the ongoing flooding situation.
