Pakistan is moving towards a digital subsidy system, as the IT Ministry petrol subsidy app mobile phones Pakistan initiative has taken a major step forward with plans to procure 24,000 smartphones for nationwide deployment.
According to official details, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom has invited expressions of interest for the purchase of these devices, which will be used to operate a dedicated mobile application for fuel subsidies.
24,000 Mobile Phones for Petrol Pumps
Under the plan, around 24,000 mobile phones will be distributed across approximately 12,000 petrol pumps in Pakistan. Each fuel station will be equipped with two devices, specifically assigned to manage subsidized fuel distribution.
Oil marketing companies will be responsible for purchasing and supplying these devices, while the National IT Board will finalize pricing and technical specifications.

How the Petrol Subsidy App Will Work
The petrol subsidy system will operate through a mobile application developed by the IT Ministry, which is currently in its final testing phase.
Through this app:
- Eligible users will receive digital vouchers
- Fuel will be provided through designated nozzles
- Purchases will be tracked digitally for transparency
The system aims to ensure fair distribution and prevent misuse of subsidized petrol.
Who Will Benefit?
Initial proposals suggest that the subsidy will mainly target:
- Motorcycle users
- Rickshaw drivers
There is also consideration to extend the benefit to small cars (up to 800cc), although a final decision is still pending.
Users may receive up to 20 liters of subsidized petrol per month, with strict limits to prevent overuse.
Strict Monitoring & Transparency
Authorities have already started monitoring petrol pumps nationwide to ensure smooth implementation of the system. The government is also working on contingency plans to handle potential challenges amid the ongoing energy crisis.
Additionally, only PTA-approved devices will be used in this initiative to maintain standardization and security.
Digital Shift in Pakistan’s Energy Sector
This initiative reflects Pakistan’s broader move towards digital governance and targeted subsidies. By using mobile technology, the government aims to:
- Reduce fuel misuse
- Improve transparency
- Provide relief to low-income groups
As the energy crisis continues, such tech-driven solutions are expected to play a key role in managing resources efficiently.
