Iran has officially postponed the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with state media announcing that the ceremonies will now begin on July 4 and conclude with his burial on July 9 in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The delay comes more than three months after Khamenei’s death, making it one of the most unusual state funeral postponements in the country’s modern history.

According to Iranian authorities, the funeral will span six days and is expected to draw millions of mourners from across the country and abroad. Officials have described the event as a major national and religious occasion, reflecting Khamenei’s position as Iran’s longest-serving Supreme Leader and one of the most influential figures in the Islamic Republic’s history.

The postponement follows earlier announcements that the funeral would take place sooner. Iranian officials have cited logistical, religious, and ceremonial considerations for the delay, including the observance of Muharram, a sacred period of mourning in Shia Islam. Authorities reportedly wanted to avoid scheduling the funeral during the first ten days of Muharram, when millions of Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, died in February 2026 amid escalating regional tensions. His death marked a significant turning point for the Islamic Republic, prompting a leadership transition and sparking widespread discussion about Iran’s political future. Since then, the country has remained in an extended period of mourning while preparations for a large-scale state funeral continued.

The upcoming ceremonies are expected to include official tributes, public gatherings, and religious observances in both Tehran and Mashhad. Iranian authorities anticipate one of the largest public commemorations in recent years, highlighting Khamenei’s lasting influence on the country’s political, religious, and strategic direction.

As Iran prepares for the final farewell, the funeral is likely to serve not only as a national mourning event but also as a symbolic moment in the country’s transition to a new chapter of leadership and governance.
