Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has claimed that he is being held under severe conditions at Adiyala Jail, describing his confinement as akin to that of a terrorist. In a rare interview with the Sunday Times, Khan revealed that he is kept in a 7x8ft cell, typically reserved for high-risk inmates, with minimal space and no ability to move freely.

Khan, who has been imprisoned at the high-security Adiyala Jail in Rawalpindi for nearly a year, alleges that he is subjected to continuous surveillance by government agencies, which he views as a breach of basic prisoner and human rights. His interview was conducted through his legal team due to restrictions on his access to writing materials.

Khan, who faces over 200 legal cases and has been convicted in several, has not been released despite securing bail or having some convictions overturned. He was initially detained by paramilitary forces on August 5 of last year following his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case. Since then, he has remained in custody on various charges.

Although a recent court ruling overturned Khan’s conviction in the Iddat case and ordered his release if no other charges were pending, he was re-arrested hours later in connection with another Toshakhana case, along with his wife, Bushra. Both remain incarcerated.

The PTI chief has frequently criticized his treatment in jail, but the PML-N government has dismissed his claims. Information Minister Atta Tarar has denied reports that Khan is being held in conditions resembling those of death row.
