India is planning to significantly raise its water intake from the Indus River system, which primarily supplies Pakistan, following a deadly April 22 attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that killed 26 civilians. India blames Pakistan-linked elements for the attack without presenting evidence, while Pakistan firmly denies any involvement.

In response, India has suspended its participation in the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and initiated steps to divert more water from rivers allocated to Pakistan. These include extending the Ranbir Canal on the Chenab River and proposing new dams and hydropower projects.

Pakistan has condemned the move, warning that tampering with the Indus River flow could be viewed as an “act of war.”
