OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models for ChatGPT users. The updated models are available to Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, while GPT-4.1 mini is also accessible to free-tier users.

GPT-4.1 features enhanced capabilities for coding, debugging, and instruction following. It’s faster and more reliable in reasoning tasks than GPT-4o. With this release, the older GPT-4.0 mini model has been retired.

Initially launched in April 2024 via the API, GPT-4.1 faced criticism over the absence of a detailed safety report. OpenAI responded that the model doesn’t qualify as a “frontier model,” so it doesn’t require the same transparency. Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems, stated that GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or exceed GPT-4o in intelligence.

Alongside the launch, OpenAI introduced a Safety Evaluations Hub to improve transparency in model testing. The move comes amid rising competition in AI coding tools. OpenAI is reportedly in talks to acquire Windsurf, while Google upgraded its Gemini chatbot with GitHub integration to enhance developer support.
