Pakistan’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has recorded strong growth, with export remittances reaching $3.38 billion during the first nine months of the current fiscal year (July–March FY2026), according to the Economic Survey 2025–26.

The figure represents a 19.7 percent increase compared to $2.83 billion recorded during the same period last year, reflecting continued expansion in Pakistan’s digital economy and increasing global demand for IT and IT-enabled services.

Officials say the ICT sector remains the largest contributor to Pakistan’s services exports, outperforming other business services, which stood at around $1.5 billion during the same period.

The survey highlights that Pakistan’s IT industry continues to strengthen its position in global markets, driven by freelance services, software exports, and growing participation in international technology projects.

A key driver of this growth is the country’s expanding freelance economy, which generated approximately $856.3 million in remittances during the same period, marking strong international demand for Pakistani digital professionals.

The report also notes that Pakistan now has more than 34,000 registered IT and IT-enabled services companies, reflecting rapid formalization and expansion of the sector.

In addition, ICT exports contributed significantly to Pakistan’s overall trade balance, generating a trade surplus of $2.91 billion, underlining the sector’s role in strengthening foreign exchange reserves.

Government officials credit the growth to improved digital infrastructure, participation in global tech events, and ongoing policy support aimed at boosting IT exports. The government has also set ambitious long-term targets to further increase ICT earnings in the coming years.

Experts believe that continued investment in skills development, digital infrastructure, and international market access will be crucial for sustaining this upward trend.
