Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has intensified its crackdown on PTA poor telecom services by issuing 39 show-cause notices and imposing penalties worth Rs 68.9 million on telecom operators across Pakistan. The regulatory authority is taking stricter action against mobile companies over poor network performance, weak connectivity, and service disruptions affecting millions of users nationwide.

PTA Tightens Action Against Telecom Operators

According to official documents, PTA issued dozens of notices and warning letters to telecom companies for failing to meet licensed quality standards. The telecom regulator revealed that operators were penalized over the past five years due to poor service quality, network outages, and customer complaints.

Reports indicate that only Rs 13.6 million of the total penalty amount has been recovered so far, while several cases remain under litigation in courts. PTA has also secured bank guarantees in some ongoing cases involving telecom operators.

Thousands of Mobile Sites Facing Network Issues

The situation remains challenging as nearly 9,000 mobile sites across Pakistan continue experiencing network availability problems. Officials attributed the disruptions to prolonged power outages, lack of commercial electricity access, right-of-way disputes, equipment theft, and vandalism at telecom infrastructure sites.

Network performance issues have reportedly worsened in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan where users frequently face weak signals, call drops, and slow internet connectivity. PTA acknowledged that service quality in these regions remains below required benchmarks despite operators claiming improvements.

Consumer Complaints Continue to Rise

Public frustration over telecom services in Pakistan continues to grow as thousands of complaints are filed every year. PTA received more than 8,000 telecom-related complaints during the first half of the year alone, covering issues such as poor mobile signals, slow internet speeds, and interrupted calls.

The authority claims it resolved over 99 percent of the complaints through its Complaint Management System (CMS), which allows users to submit issues through a helpline, online portal, and mobile application.

However, many users on social media platforms and online forums continue expressing dissatisfaction with telecom performance and complaint resolution procedures. Some users claim network quality has deteriorated significantly in recent years.

PTA Conducts Nationwide Quality Surveys

To monitor operator performance, PTA conducted dozens of planned Quality of Service (QoS) surveys and complaint-based drive tests across different cities and regions. These surveys were designed to independently evaluate mobile network quality and identify areas where telecom operators failed to meet standards.

The regulator stated that enforcement actions are initiated whenever operators fail to comply with licensed obligations. PTA says it remains committed to improving telecom services and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity nationwide.

Pakistan’s Telecom Industry Facing Growing Challenges

Pakistan’s telecom sector continues to face multiple infrastructure and operational challenges. Frequent electricity shortages, increasing operational costs, and security concerns have affected the ability of telecom companies to maintain consistent network performance across the country.

The expansion of 4G services and future 5G rollout plans have also increased pressure on operators to improve existing infrastructure and service reliability. Despite technological advancements, many users still struggle with unstable mobile internet and inconsistent voice call quality.

Industry experts believe telecom companies will need significant investment in infrastructure upgrades, backup power systems, and network expansion to meet growing consumer demand.

PTA Warns Operators Over Compliance Failures

PTA has warned telecom operators to improve service quality standards and address persistent coverage gaps. The authority emphasized that regulatory action will continue against companies failing to comply with operational benchmarks.

The regulator also encouraged consumers and lawmakers to help identify low-coverage regions so targeted improvements can be implemented more effectively.

With digital connectivity becoming increasingly important for businesses, education, and communication, reliable telecom services remain critical for Pakistan’s growing digital economy.

Future of Telecom Services in Pakistan

The latest enforcement measures indicate that PTA is taking a tougher stance against poor telecom services in Pakistan. However, ongoing infrastructure challenges and rising consumer complaints suggest that major improvements are still needed across the industry.

As Pakistan moves toward advanced digital services and future 5G deployment, telecom operators will likely face greater pressure to improve service reliability, internet speeds, and nationwide coverage.

The Rs 68.9 million penalties and multiple notices issued by PTA highlight the regulator’s growing focus on accountability and service quality in Pakistan’s telecom sector.
