PTCL Internet Slowdown Expected Across Pakistan from May 11 to 18
A nationwide PTCL Internet Slowdown is expected to affect users across Pakistan from May 11 to May 18 as international submarine cable maintenance work begins this week. The temporary disruption may lead to slower browsing speeds, buffering issues, gaming lag, and interruptions in online services during peak internet usage hours.
According to reports, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has informed customers that one of the international submarine communication cable systems connected to Pakistan will undergo scheduled maintenance and repair operations. Since Pakistan relies heavily on undersea fiber-optic cables for global internet connectivity, users may experience reduced internet performance throughout the maintenance period.
Telecom officials stated that the maintenance work is necessary to ensure long-term stability and reliability of internet infrastructure. However, due to the large scale of the operation, temporary slowdown in internet services is expected nationwide.
Users may particularly notice:
- Slower download and upload speeds
- Video buffering on YouTube and streaming platforms
- Higher ping during online gaming
- Disruptions in video conferencing
- Delays in cloud-based applications
- Intermittent connectivity issues
The impact is expected to become more noticeable during evening peak hours when internet traffic significantly increases across Pakistan.
Pakistan’s growing digital economy has made stable internet access increasingly important for freelancers, businesses, students, remote workers, and online content creators. Any major disruption in connectivity can affect productivity, online communication, and digital operations nationwide.
Industry experts say submarine cable maintenance is a routine but highly sensitive process because undersea cables carry the majority of global internet traffic. Even minor disruptions or m aintenance activities can impact internet services in countries that depend on limited international bandwidth routes.
The latest slowdown also highlights Pakistan’s ongoing dependence on international submarine cable systems. Telecom analysts have repeatedly emphasized the need for additional redundancy, improved fiber infrastructure, and alternative internet gateways to minimize the impact of future outages and maintenance periods.
Social media users have already started expressing concerns over possible disruptions, especially freelancers and remote workers who rely heavily on uninterrupted high-speed internet for international clients and online meetings. Gaming communities and streaming users are also worried about increased latency and slower performance during the maintenance period.
PTCL has advised users to remain patient while engineers complete the scheduled work and restore full service capacity. Internet performance is expected to return to normal once the maintenance operation concludes on May 18.
