In a significant move under the federal government’s rightsizing initiative, the Ministry of Science and Technology has eliminated 201 positions from two of its major departments: the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and the National Metrology Institute of Pakistan (NMIP). Official notifications have been issued to implement the restructuring.
At PSQCA, a total of 174 posts have been abolished. Of these, 61 positions have been terminated immediately, while 113 have been designated as “dying cadre” — meaning they will be phased out through retirement or natural attrition. The affected roles range from senior-level Directors (Grade-19) to technical and clerical staff, including 4 positions in Grade-19, 31 in Grade-18, 36 in Grade-17, and 10 in Grade-14.

Meanwhile, NMIP has seen a reduction of 27 positions. Out of these, 11 posts have been eliminated with immediate effect, and 16 have been marked as dying cadre. The eliminated roles include 3 in Grade-18, 5 in Grade-17, and various others between Grade-5 and Grade-15.
The decision is part of a broader federal cabinet directive to reduce 60% of vacant posts across all ministries and divisions. In compliance with this mandate, the Ministry of Science and Technology has reviewed its staffing structure, identified non-essential roles, and acted to enhance operational efficiency by reducing redundancy.
