The Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima, attributed Pakistan’s recent internet slowdown to the widespread use of virtual private networks (VPNs). During a press conference, she emphasized that the federal government has not intentionally restricted or slowed internet services, instead pointing to VPNs as the primary cause of reduced connection speeds due to their data routing through remote servers. The minister did not address updates regarding the national firewall intended for social media regulation.
Highlighting her tenure’s achievements, she pointed to record-breaking IT exports, crediting the youth for their contribution. She also announced several initiatives, including the establishment of IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi, the creation of 250 e-employment centers nationwide, and the introduction of coding programs in five languages at the primary school level. Additionally, she outlined plans for nationwide 5G technology deployment, expansion of internet infrastructure with four new cables, and the development of a virtual production studio.

The minister further noted efforts to digitalize key national databases, such as NADRA, and implement QR codes at over one million locations to streamline payment processes and enhance tax collection. Expressing optimism, Shaza emphasized the potential for digital innovations to drive economic growth and improve citizens’ lives across Pakistan.
