The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced plans to use space-based technology to strengthen disaster preparedness in Pakistan. The move aims to shift the country’s disaster management strategy from a reactive to a proactive approach.
At the launch of a training session titled “Space-based Disaster Management — Shifting Focus from Reactive to Proactive Approaches” in Islamabad, SUPARCO’s Member for Technology, Zafar Iqbal, said satellite tools and space applications can revolutionize disaster response.
“These technologies enhance early warning systems and enable national authorities to design effective preparedness policies,” he noted, adding that mitigation and adaptation are both essential priorities.

Iqbal stressed that resilience comes from readiness before a crisis strikes. With satellite imagery, geospatial mapping, and remote sensing, authorities will be able to identify vulnerable areas, monitor potential hazards, and make data-driven decisions in real time.
This proactive use of space technology, he explained, can save lives, protect infrastructure, and ensure resources are directed where they are most needed.
