A special envoy linked to former US President Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that FIFA replace Iran with Italy in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to international media reports.
The proposal was made by US special envoy Paolo Zampolli, who reportedly raised the idea during discussions involving FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He argued that Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, deserves a place in the tournament despite failing to qualify through the regular qualification process.
Reports indicate that the suggestion is also linked to diplomatic considerations, including efforts to improve relations between the United States and Italy amid wider geopolitical tensions involving Iran. Italy had failed to qualify after losing its playoff campaign, while Iran secured its place through Asian qualifiers.
The proposal has sparked global attention, but FIFA has not confirmed any plans to replace Iran or alter the qualified teams list. According to football governing body sources, there is currently no official discussion to remove or substitute any qualified nation from the tournament.

Iran, meanwhile, has stated that it intends to participate in the World Cup and continues its preparations, although political tensions and security concerns have created uncertainty around its participation.
Football analysts note that FIFA generally follows strict qualification rules, making any political replacement highly unlikely without extraordinary circumstances such as withdrawal or suspension of a team.
At present, the suggestion remains an informal diplomatic proposal rather than an official decision, and Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup remains unchanged.
