UK Raises Minimum Wage to £12.71 for 2026 Amid Inflation and Business Concerns

Britain has announced a 4.1% increase in the national minimum wage, raising it to £12.71 per hour starting April 2026. The move aims to keep lower-income workers’ wages aligned with rising average earnings.

This adjustment follows a 6.7% rise earlier in the year and is expected to benefit 2.4 million workers aged 21 and above. Additionally, around 300,000 younger workers and apprentices will see wage increases ranging from 6% to 8.5%, as part of the government’s long-term plan to eliminate lower youth pay brackets.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves emphasized that the wage boost ensures workers are “fairly rewarded” for their contributions. The announcement comes ahead of a budget that is widely expected to introduce significant tax hikes.

However, the wage hike has sparked criticism from the hospitality sector, where businesses warn that rising labor costs may lead to price increases and fuel further inflation. UKHospitality chair Kate Nicholls stated that many companies have already “reached their limit” in coping with growing expenses.

The UK continues to struggle with 3.6% inflation, the highest among advanced economies as of October. The Bank of England has cautioned that wage growth above 3% could slow progress toward achieving its 2% inflation target, especially as productivity remains weak.

Despite concerns from employers, the Low Pay Commission reported no major evidence that previous wage increases for over-21 workers negatively affected employment levels. The nation’s unemployment rate currently stands at 5%, its highest since 2021.

The Commission said its recommendation strikes a balance between protecting workers from rising living costs and acknowledging the financial pressures businesses face, particularly with upcoming tax increases.
