There will be a new prototype display and hinge on display at CES 2023 from Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics which makes screens. The Verge reports that Samsung Display demonstrated a “Flex In & Out” display that can be rotated 360 degrees, indicating that it is capable of folding both inwards and outwards.
A new hinge design is also featured on the display, which is said to create a less visible fold in the display. Due to the ‘teardrop hinge’, the display can form a looser shape when folded inwards when it is folded inwards – just like the shape of a teardrop – and therefore the display will be subjected to less stress as a result.
In this case, Samsung Display is not the first company to show off a ‘Flex In & Out’ prototype that embraces a folding design all around that embraces an all-around folding technology. According to reports, at the International Information Display Conference (IMID) in Korea in 2021, a ‘Flex In & Out’ display would be unveiled. It is in contrast to this approach that the display is folded like an ‘S’ and split out into multiple parts, rather than folding like an ‘S’. As of August 2022, when the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is released, the Samsung Fold series is still using an inward-folding display.

However, it is possible that the new screen will appear in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 device. Rumors suggest that the device may have less visible folds thanks to a similar hinge design.
