As a power source, smartphones and most of the gadgets out there use either Lithium-polymer (Li-poly) batteries or Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries as their energy source. Although both of these technologies have been working just fine, there are a few shortcomings with them that need to be addressed. There seems to be a better alternative to be found in Honor’s phone, however. At today’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Chinese company briefly introduced its first silicon-carbon battery that has a higher energy density than its predecessor. Honor CEO George Zhao discussed the first silicon-carbon battery during his announcement of the Magic 5 Pro smartphone, which was unveiled yesterday. Anodes that use graphite on the anode of this battery have been claimed to provide 12.8% greater energy density than traditional lithium batteries that use graphite on the anode. There would be an increase in battery capacity if the energy density of the battery was higher.

Putting it in simpler terms, let me explain what I mean. It is worth mentioning that the new Honor Magic 5 Pro is equipped with a battery that has a capacity of 5,100mAh. In contrast, it would have been possible to increase the capacity of the battery if it had been powered by a silicon-carbon battery. A chart shared by Honor during the presentation explains to the audience how lithium batteries lose their charge quickly once their voltage drops below 3.5 volts, at which point they become useless. Despite this, a silicon-carbon battery has 240% more capacity left at 3.5 volts than a standard battery.
GSMArena has pointed out that the newly announced Honor Magic 5 Pro is listed in China with a 5,450mAh battery, which is an indication that it’s already using a silicon-carbon battery, as reported by GSMArena. On the other hand, international models are equipped with just a standard battery of 5,100mAh. It will be up to Honor to provide more details in this regard, so we will have to wait for them.
