The upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is poised for a subtle design refresh, particularly noticeable in the Pro models, which are rumored to feature a new Capture button reminiscent of Sony phones, based on a recent case leak.
A recent case leak for both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus further solidifies speculation about a vertical camera design. Departing from the diagonal arrangement seen in recent iPhone generations, the iPhone 16 appears to revert to the squircle-ish vertical shape reminiscent of the iPhone X. In this setup, the cameras are stacked one atop the other, with an LED flash positioned beside them. Renders based on early prototypes suggest that each camera lens will have distinct rings, and the camera island will protrude slightly in a pill-shaped manner.

While this design shift may seem minor, it’s intended to support spatial video recording, a feature enabled by the alignment of two cameras. This capability is crucial for recording spatial videos compatible with the Vision Pro VR headset, often referred to as the “Spatial Computer.”
Furthermore, there’s speculation that the iPhone 16 series may inherit the Action Button introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro, which offers configurable functionalities. The Capture Button from the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to trickle down to non-Pro models as well.
In terms of materials, the iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to boast a glossy titanium frame akin to that of the iPhone 15 Pro. This enhancement is reportedly achieved through advancements in material and color processing. However, it’s worth noting that this frame may not be entirely scratch-resistant.
