The Punjab government has recently amended the Punjab Finance Act of 1977, introducing a professional tax that has sparked widespread concern among residents. This tax, which will be deducted directly from the salaries of employees across various sectors, is expected to add to the financial pressure on workers throughout the province.

Already facing criticism for its economic policies, the Punjab government is now under fire for this latest decision. The amendment requires all companies in the province to deduct the professional tax from their employees’ salaries and ensure it is paid to the government. The responsibility for this deduction falls on the chief principal officer of each company.

Non-compliance with the new regulation will result in penalties, adding further concern among businesses. The enforcement of this tax has raised alarms, particularly among lower-income workers, as it applies to employees in all sectors, potentially exacerbating financial difficulties for many.

This amendment follows a ruling by the Lahore High Court, which has made the implementation of the tax mandatory, leading to increased scrutiny of the government’s economic approach.
