A growing controversy is emerging on Meta’s social media platform, Threads, where “Threads Moderation Failures” have become a significant topic of concern. Users are expressing frustration over their accounts being deleted or restricted for unusual reasons.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, has directly addressed some of these complaints, assuring users that he is personally investigating the issue.

Content moderation has long been a challenge for social media platforms, but recent reports, including firsthand accounts from The Verge staff, suggest Meta is overzealous with its bans. One Verge staff member was banned for being labeled a child, despite being an adult, while another was banned for jokingly saying “I want to die” in response to a heatwave. Meta appears to be implementing bans and restrictions too frequently and too swiftly.
Some users, like Jorge Caballero, claim that Meta’s automated moderation system includes a faulty fact-checking system that incorrectly flags content as political or controversial. This includes the suppression of posts containing factual information about significant events, such as hurricanes.
The issue also extends to Instagram, where users have been banned for allegedly being “under 13” when they are, in fact, older. Appeals to recover these banned accounts have been largely unsuccessful, resulting in users losing access to all their account data.
While the exact cause behind these issues remains unclear, it is evident that Meta is facing a serious moderation challenge that needs immediate attention.
