UAE Hits Record 50.4°C in May, Hottest Since 2003

The United Arab Emirates has recorded its highest temperature ever for the month of May, reaching a scorching 50.4 degrees Celsius. The temperature was measured in Al Shawamekh, Abu Dhabi, at 2:30 PM local time on Friday, according to the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM).

“This is the highest temperature we’ve ever recorded for May since we started keeping records in 2003,” the NCM told AFP. The previous record for May stood at 50.2°C, documented in 2009.

The milestone highlights growing concerns about climate change, particularly in the Gulf region where extreme temperatures are becoming increasingly common. Experts warn that rising global temperatures could have significant impacts on water resources, energy demand, and public health across the Middle East.

The new heat record has put authorities on high alert, urging residents to take extra precautions and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
