A tragic aviation incident occurred on Wednesday when an Air India passenger aircraft carrying approximately 240 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.
The London-bound Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, took off at 1:38 PM but reportedly crashed within minutes near Meghaninagar, a densely populated area close to the airport. The crash prompted a swift and large-scale emergency response, raising concerns about possible casualties.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick black smoke rising from the crash site, with visuals shared by local media showing flames and scattered debris near the airport’s perimeter. Emergency services, including fire brigades, ambulances, and disaster response teams, were immediately dispatched. The airport has been temporarily shut down as a safety measure.

Air India released a brief statement, confirming the incident: “Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12. We are currently gathering more information and will share updates as soon as possible.”
While it is reported that 242 passengers were aboard the flight, officials have not yet confirmed the number of survivors or casualties. Rescue and recovery operations are underway, with efforts focused on locating and assisting those affected.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. Aviation authorities and local investigators have launched a formal probe to determine the factors behind the crash.
