Israeli airstrikes targeted an annex of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, resulting in at least eight reported deaths. Among the casualties was Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Quds Force within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as confirmed by Iranian state media. Syria’s official news agency, SANA, stated that the attack specifically hit the Iranian consulate building in Damascus’ Mazzeh neighborhood. International media corroborated the destruction of the adjacent annex, located in an upscale area, with images and videos depicting significant damage. Iranian sources reported the complete destruction of the annex, while assuring the safety of the ambassador. British MP George Galloway commented on the incident, suggesting potential responses from Iran and Russia, emphasizing Russia’s historical alliance with Syria and hinting at the strategic importance of the Golan Heights.

George Galloway, a British Member of Parliament, remarked on the situation, pointing out that not only Iran but also Russia might feel compelled to respond to the Israeli airstrikes in Damascus. Given Russia’s longstanding alliance with Syria, Galloway suggested that such violations of Syrian sovereignty might prompt a reaction from Moscow as well. He emphasized the significance of monitoring developments in the Golan Heights, hinting at the potential for further escalation in the region.
