The latest US tariffs on Chinese and Vietnamese imports are tightening the pressure on electronics giants like Apple, potentially leading to higher iPhone prices for American consumers.

Rising Manufacturing Costs

A report by The Wall Street Journal, citing data from iFixit and TechInsights, reveals that producing a 256 GB iPhone 16 Pro currently costs Apple about $580. Key components include:

  • Rear camera system: $126.95
  • A18 Pro chip: $90.85
  • Display: $37.97

With a new 54% tariff on Chinese goods, the estimated production cost would spike to $847 — an increase of $267. This doesn’t even account for Apple’s profit margins.

Retail Prices Under Pressure

Currently priced at $1,100, the iPhone 16 Pro may soon cost more. Although the tariff impacts manufacturing, not the retail price directly, rising production expenses squeeze Apple’s margins.

If Apple passes even 50% of the increased cost to consumers, the new price could hit $1,230 or higher.

Apple’s Strategy

Apple is reportedly:

  • Stockpiling iPhones in the US to delay price hikes until the iPhone 17 release in September
  • Expanding production in India and Brazil to reduce dependence on China

However, China remains Apple’s main assembly hub, meaning exposure to future tariffs stays high.

Conclusion

With tariffs soaring and supply chains in flux, US consumers may soon face the most expensive iPhones ever. The iPhone 17 could mark the beginning of a new era of tariff-influenced pricing.
